Planning

North Island or South Island? How to choose

Wanderway planners 4 min readUpdated 2026-09-22

The honest differences between the two, when one island is the right call, and when both are worth the extra flight.

It's the first question everyone asks and there's no wrong answer, but there is a right answer for you.

The North Island

Warmer, greener, more people and more culture. Auckland is the main gateway, Rotorua is geothermal country and the heart of Māori tourism, the Bay of Islands is subtropical, and Wellington is the compact, clever capital. Drives are shorter, the roads are easier, and it suits families and shorter trips.

Choose the North if you have six to eight nights, are travelling with young children or older parents, or if culture, coast and easy driving matter more than mountains.

The South Island

Bigger, emptier, colder and the reason most people come. The Southern Alps, Aoraki / Mount Cook, the lakes at Tekapo and Wānaka, Queenstown, and Fiordland's Milford and Doubtful Sounds. Drives are longer and the scenery is constant. It suits travellers who want landscapes, adventure, snow, wine and space.

Choose the South if you have eight to twelve nights, if mountains and fiords are the point, or if you're coming in winter for snow.

Both islands

Worth it from about twelve nights, and comfortable from fourteen. The trick is not to drive the whole length: fly between Wellington or Auckland and Christchurch or Queenstown, and spend the saved days somewhere good. The Cook Strait ferry is a lovely three hours if you have time; a one-hour flight if you don't.

What we usually say

  • Under a week: one island, one region done well.
  • Eight to eleven nights: one island, properly.
  • Twelve nights or more: both, with a flight in the middle.
  • Coming back? Do the island you skipped. Most people do.
