Travelling from

🇺🇸New Zealand from United States

For American travellers New Zealand is the far-away trip that turns out to be easy: English-speaking, safe, well signposted, and small enough that two weeks covers a lot. Most of our US guests come for twelve to eighteen nights, escaping a northern winter for a southern summer.

  • New York

Overnight westbound flights cross the date line, so you leave in the evening and arrive two calendar days later in the morning — fresh enough to start gently. Coming home you land the same day you left.

Before you fly

NZeTA before you fly

US passport holders are visa-waiver visitors: request an NZeTA online (it takes minutes to apply, up to a few days to approve) and pay the International Visitor Levy with it. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date. Entry rules are set by Immigration New Zealand and change from time to time — we help you understand the steps, but always confirm the current requirement for your passport at immigration.govt.nz before you book flights.

When to come

The months that work for travellers from the US.

Matched to your holidays and to New Zealand's seasons, which run opposite to the northern hemisphere.

December–February

New Zealand summer: long days, warm lakes, every trail and road open.

March–April

Shoulder season — quieter, still warm, autumn colour in the south. Our top pick for couples.

September–November

Spring: waterfalls at full flow, whale season at its best, lower prices.

Good to know

The small things that make it easy.

Driving
Left-hand side, and mostly two-lane roads. A US licence is accepted. Many guests prefer a driver-guide for the alpine passes.
Tipping
Not expected anywhere — prices are what you pay, including 15% GST.
Power
230 V, type I plugs (angled flat pins). Most US electronics are dual-voltage; bring an adapter.
Distances
Small country, slow roads. Christchurch to Queenstown is 300 miles and a long, beautiful day.
Phone
US plans roam at a daily rate; a local eSIM is cheaper for a two-week trip.

Questions we hear

What travellers from the US ask us.

Is two weeks enough for both islands?

Fourteen nights is the minimum we'd suggest for both, with a flight between them rather than the ferry. Eighteen nights lets you slow down properly.

How does payment work from the US?

We quote in New Zealand dollars and invoice by bank transfer; your bank or a transfer service converts at the day's rate. A deposit holds the bookings, the balance is due before travel.

Can you book the lodges and guides directly?

Yes — that's most of what we do. Luxury lodges, private guides, heli-days and small boats, all confirmed in writing in your trip file.

Do I need travel insurance?

We strongly recommend it, and some experiences require it. New Zealand's accident scheme covers treatment for injuries but not trip cancellation or medical evacuation home.
